Cody Ray
Seattle-based artist
Growing up in a Gulf Coast swamp along a bayou, I was surrounded by the raw beauty of nature—muddy water, plant life, filtered light, and the occasional alligator. I learned to see what is there and what is hidden just beneath the surface.
As an artist, my process is a dance between control and surrender. My mixed-media paintings explore memory, mythmaking, and the human figure through intuitive, dreamlike compositions. Inspired by Surrealism and automatic drawing, I begin with intention, lose myself in the work, and edit as I go, embracing whatever materials serve the narrative.
What I love about making art is that it has little utility, but it's also the most important thing in the world. What an amazing contradiction.
